The uk has several species of deer, Red deer and Roe deer being our native species and Fallow, Chinese, Muntjac and Sika deer being non native.
Out of these 6 species the Fallow deer population is at its highest in the uk and management to keep there numbers under control is of great importance.
Having a healthy population of deer is good for maintaining open areas of ground and low level vegetation within woodland areas but the current overpopulation is having a huge affect on crops due to over grazing and the damage caused to forestry and woodland is irreversible. This overpopulation can potentially lead to starvation or even illness within large herds of deer.
